Pool Problems

Chlorine Demand

When pool contaminant levels get too high, your usual dose of chlorine doesn’t get the job done. Pool maintenance professionals refer to this phenomenon as “chlorine demand,” or “chlorine lock.” The solution is often more chlorine, but how much is too much? SENSE makes it easy to deal with chlorine demand—without irritating the eyes and skin of your guests.

Understanding “chlorine demand.”

“Chlorine demand” happens when contaminant levels get too high in your pool. If you keep adding chlorine, but don’t see it register on test strips or water kits, your pool’s bacteria and/or algae is overpowering the chemicals. The amount of chlorine you need to add to achieve safe swimming conditions is called the “demand.”

Meeting the demand

When chlorine levels get too low, you end up with algae. When they get too high, swimmers may experience irritated eyes and skin, as well as a strong “pool smell” as excess chlorine causes organic matter in the pool to break down.

Finding your balance

To safely kill contaminants without irritating swimmers, your pool’s chlorine levels should be between 1 and 4 parts per million. SENSE constantly tests and measures your water chemistry, so you always know exactly how much chlorine your water needs to beat chlorine demand, and keep your pool safe, clean and perfectly balanced.

Treating Chlorine Demand/Lock

Step 1

This is a good place to start, and something you should be doing occasionally anyway. Freshening up your pool water gives your pool a bit of a “refresher,” and lets you start with some cleaner water. Start by draining about 1/4th of the water and refilling it; then use SENSE to test your chlorine again and see if your issue resolves. If not, you can repeat the process until your total chlorine and free chlorine numbers test equally.

Step 2

Another option is non-chlorine shock. Non-chlorine shock oxidizes your water, restoring the balance and making it cleaner. Use SENSE to tell you exactly how much non-chorine shock to add. After adding the shock to the pool, wait a few hours and test again. Repeat the process if necessary.

Step 3

A full chlorine shock uses large amounts of chlorine is added in order to achieve breakpoint chlorination. SENSE will tell you exactly how much chlorine is needed in order to reach breakpoint chlorination, or you can just follow the directions you’d normally use to fully shock your pool. Once finished, wait a few hours and test the chlorine levels again.
